Image Use Policy.

A legal disclaimer

Last updated: October 1, 2026

Our website features a few different kinds of images — photos of the children our programs reach, photos of our volunteers and supporters, and images from the comic books we distribute. Because these come from different sources and carry different responsibilities, this policy explains how we handle each.

Photos of children

We do not photograph patients ourselves. Any photo or story featuring a child that appears on our website, social media, or in our materials is provided to us by the partner hospital or organization that cared for that child — and that hospital has already obtained explicit consent from a parent or guardian before sharing it with us. We rely on our hospital and partner relationships to secure that consent; we do not independently request or collect photo consent from families.

When we share a child's photo or story, our practice is to:

  • Use a first name or initials only — never a full name — alongside any photo

  • Show the child's face only when the source consent covers public/marketing use

  • Avoid sharing identifying medical details, diagnosis specifics, or treatment information unless the hospital or family has explicitly included that in what they shared for public use

  • Additional identifying details, e.g., hospital name or general location, are only provided with the consent of those providing the images.

Before any image or story of a child is published, we confirm with the providing hospital or partner that parental/guardian consent for public use has already been obtained. We do not publish a child's image without that confirmation.

Photos of volunteers and supporters

Photos of our volunteers, donors, and supporters — for example, at a drive or event — are used with their own consent, given at the time the photo is taken or shared with us.

Comic book cover and artwork images

Our website may display images of comic book covers, pages, or artwork to illustrate the kinds of materials we collect and distribute, or to describe our programs. These images are the copyrighted and/or trademarked property of their respective publishers, creators, and rights holders. We display them for identification and editorial/informational purposes only — to show what we do, not to claim ownership. Their use does not imply any endorsement, sponsorship, or affiliation by the publisher or creator unless explicitly stated.

If you want an image removed

For a child's photo: consent for photo use is typically revocable. A parent, guardian, or the child themselves (once of appropriate age) can request removal by contacting us at mark@comicbooksforkids.org or by reaching out through the hospital that originally shared the story. We will remove the image from our own website and materials promptly upon request. As is standard practice, removal from our site cannot retroactively undo any prior publication, sharing, or redistribution that occurred before the request.

For a volunteer/supporter photo: contact us at mark@comicbooksforkids.org and we'll remove it promptly.

For images depicting comic book characters, contact us at mark@comicbooksforkids.org and we'll remove it

How long we keep and use images

Images may be used for any number of years unless a removal request is received,

Security

Images shared with us are stored and handled with reasonable care to prevent unauthorized access or use.
